In the month of March we continued our Leadership Development Series with A Conversation on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. The panel discussion included speakers Erik C. Smith, Managing Member of Inclusivity LLC and Dr. Luz D. Randolph, Assistant Director of Development, Diversity Initiatives at University of South Florida Foundation.
The discussion also included learning opportunities or how to educate ourselves on diversity, equity, and inclusion. This subject matter was one that the Young Leaders’ Society committee came up with because of personal experiences that lead us to want to share and get advice to learn from. We look forward to having more talks like this in the future.
This stimulating conversation brought up topics of internal biases and how we can be more self-aware so that we can learn and grow from situations. It answered questions such as: What do our own inherent biases look like? How can we handle uncomfortable conversations when a colleague’s words or actions are offensive? What do different kinds of privileges look like?
Thank you to everyone who attended and thank you to Little Donut House for the donuts and the Straz Center for the Performing Arts for having us as well as providing coffee and tea.
The Leadership Development Series is hosted by the United Way Suncoast Young Leaders’ Society to foster philanthropy and leadership. Email firstname.lastname@example.org for more information on how to become a member.
