Summer Arts Integration Literacy (SAIL) Program
Providing enriched summer care and specialized tutoring for children in need to combat summer learning loss.
SAIL was founded in 2014 to address the disparity of children from low-income families in Sarasota who need access to the same resources and opportunities as their peers in other socioeconomic brackets.
The focus of the program is two-fold:
- The partnership with the Booker Middle School provides a literacy program that focuses on preventing summer reading loss by embedding tutoring in their summer camp; and
- The University of South Florida Sarasota Manatee (USFSM) partnership develops College of Education students’ skills and expertise in literacy, art integration and evaluation of teacher-child interaction.
In partnership with Booker Middle School’s Summer Transition Camp, provided SAIL Language Arts tutoring with an arts integration component to 44 students. 97% of the students present for at least two-thirds of the tutoring sessions demonstrated literacy gains.
Pilot new arts integration models to serve more children.
