UWS News Briefs – February 2020

A Year Like No Other
Like so many, we look back on 2020 as a year that changed us all. The heartbreak of so much suffering and loss, the exposure of inequities in our systems and the economic impact of a year-long pandemic that has been particularly devastating for our ALICE (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) population. More than ever, our community needed United Way Suncoast and we needed you. Thank you for supporting us and the people in our community. With your help, United Way Suncoast:

• Raised $1.8 million for our COVID-19 Response and Recovery Fund.
• Created a Coronavirus Assistance Center providing links to CARES Act Funding, employment opportunities, food banks, eviction help and many other resources.
• Partnered with Feeding Tampa Bay to provide weekly food distribution at our Resource Centers.
• Prepared 9,161 tax returns for free, returning $14.4 million back to the community.

UWS Opens New Reading Room in Bradenton Village
Bringing educational resources and programs to community housing neighborhoods, where our most vulnerable children and families live, is key to providing access. “Place-based” neighborhood initiatives are the concept behind United Way Suncoast’s Reading Rooms. Our newest reading room, the Bradenton Village Reading Room, is a newly designed site located in the downtown Bradenton area. Programming at this location will begin with a focus on families with children ages 0 to 5-years-old. Although we aren’t officially open at this new site due to COVID-19, we recently held a live virtual ribbon cutting.

Major Gifts Team Changes
With the start of the new year have come changes to the Major Gifts Team. After more than two years at UWS, both Jan Resch, VP, Major Gifts and Roland Emerton, Director, Major Gifts, Manatee/Sarasota Areas have retired from UWS. They both leave with sincere gratitude to all of you for your generous support of United Way Suncoast and our mission. We wish them all the best! Searches are currently underway to fill both positions. During this time of transition, please feel free to reach out to:
