United Way Suncoast Brings Together More Than 2,300 Volunteers for Day of Caring

Massive Volunteer Event is the Largest of Its Kind Across Five Counties

More than 2,300 volunteers turned out on October 11th for United Way Suncoast’s annual Day of Caring. This year’s event brought 39 local companies and community groups together to tackle 96 projects at local social service agencies, schools and community organizations. Volunteer projects included painting, light construction, cleaning, organizing and landscaping, as well as reading and art activities with children. Through Day of Caring, local companies and organizations send teams to volunteer on projects that service agencies might not have had the manpower or resources to afford to tackle on their own.

Some of the projects included:

  • Reading with children, light gardening and sprucing up the grounds at Children First in Sarasota
  • Preparing the competition field for the high school level robotics competition ROBOTICON, with Foundation for Community Driven Innovation in Tampa
  • Cleaning and organizing the thrift store and pouring concrete for sidewalks and picnic area at Homeless Empowerment Program in Clearwater
  • Sprucing up Camp Honi Hanta by enhancing the interior lodge at Girl Scouts of Gulfcoast Florida in Bradenton
  • Light construction and painting at a Habitat for Humanity home in Arcadia

Day of Caring is the largest volunteer event in the Suncoast region that connects nonprofit agencies with corporate and community volunteers. Projects span DeSoto, Hillsborough, Manatee, Pinellas and Sarasota Counties. Day of Caring has been part of United Way Suncoast’s mission to connect the caring people of the community with opportunities to make a difference for more than 27 years.

The value of donated work for this year is estimated to be $273,932*, amounting to 10,772 hours or 269 weeks of work.
