Reading Room Delivers Resources To Both Parents and Children

The United Way Suncoast Reading Room brings education equality through high-quality education programs and resources to where our most vulnerable children and families live. Families like those who live at La Mirada Garden Apartments. Since its inception at La Mirada Garden Apartments in 2017, the Reading Room has become what it was intended– a year-round platform of education services and resources for parents and children.

Services are resident requested and delivered through collaborations with community partners. La Mirada Management (LMGA) has partnered with Manatee Literacy Council (MLC) for Adult ESOL classes. Currently, twenty-four residents are signed up. The Reading Room will be utilized for child-care as needed.

“Music in Motion”, a high-energy parent and child engagement program started January 14, 2019 and runs through May. Music in Motion encourages parent/child bonding while developing early learning and literacy skills. The class is bilingual in Spanish and English and held in the Reading Room.

New fencing will further expand the size of the playground attached to the United Way Suncoast Reading Room. Florida Power & Light did an incredible job with the assembly of the playground which will undoubtedly be put to good use by residents of La Mirada for years to come.

LMGA will also now open on Saturdays to accommodate free tax preparation services through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program starting in mid-February 2019. If you are interested in becoming a VITA volunteer, click here.

Summer programming for 2019 is being created. For more information on becoming a partner in this work, contact Cindy Cavallaro Day at ccavallaroday@uwsuncoast.org.
