United Way Suncoast and Dwyer Workforce Development Celebrate CNA Graduates

Blog Post By Candace Rotolo

United Way Suncoast (UWS) recently celebrated the latest milestone in its Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) program, marking the first full graduating class in partnership with Dwyer Workforce Development (DWD).

Each of the nine graduates honored brought a unique and inspiring story to the program. Bailey Nichols, a former Panama City television news reporter, decided to transition into healthcare. The desire to make a direct impact on people’s lives drew him in. Emily Taft’s inspiration rose after caring for her grandmother during a time of health struggles. She realized she possessed a passion for providing compassionate care. Their journeys exemplify the program’s mission of creating new career pathways for those seeking meaningful work in healthcare.

The graduation ceremony, held on March 28 at the N. Tampa Community Center in Sulphur Springs, recognized these dedicated individuals for successfully completing the eight-week CNA training. UWS Board Member Sonja Rosario, Citi’s Senior Vice President of Client Experience for Retail Banking, served as the event’s guest speaker. She offered words of encouragement on resilience, perseverance, and the importance of compassion in the healthcare field.

Fulfilling A Vital Role

For many of these graduates, earning a CNA certification represents the first step toward a long-term career in healthcare. Some plan to continue their education by pursuing Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) or Registered Nurse (RN) degrees. UWS works to remove financial barriers so students can focus on their education. The program covers 100% of tuition, books, and state exam fees. DWD further supports students by assisting with transportation and other essential services. As “Dwyer Scholars,” graduates receive continued mentorship and job placement assistance, ensuring a smooth transition into the workforce.

CNAs play a vital role in patient care, often serving as the first point of contact in hospitals, rehabilitation centers, and nursing homes. With an aging population and a growing demand for healthcare workers, the industry needs their skills now more than ever. According to workforce projections, the demand for CNAs is expected to grow by 4% over the next eight years, and 99% of nursing homes nationwide report staffing shortages. The graduates of this program are stepping into a profession where they can make an immediate and lasting impact.

The ‘Village Model’ Carries On

UWS Coordinator Kimberly Miller emphasized the community’s unwavering support for the graduates, reminding them that they are not alone on their career journey. “There is now a whole community cheering you on to success,” she told the graduates.

The UWS CNA program serves as more than just a training initiative—it provides a comprehensive career pipeline combining education and holistic support. Through strategic partnerships with organizations like DWD, UWS continues to empower individuals, strengthen communities, and enhance the healthcare workforce. As these new CNAs enter the field, they carry with them the support, skills, and dedication needed to provide compassionate care and improve lives.
