A special magic occurs when you read to children. Eyes widen, bodies calm and awe fills the room as students hang on every word uttered by the narrator.
You change the inflections in your voice to mimic characters. You whisper in the quiet moments and roar when the excitement rises in the story. The connection grows palpable. Applause fills the air when you finish, and although test results can’t measure the magnitude of the moment, you know you’ve made an impact.
100 Children In 100th Year
On March 2, Read Across America dedicates the day to promoting reading motivation and awareness among children. It encourages every child in every community to revel in the joy of reading.
As United Way Suncoast continues to mark its Centennial Celebration, we’re thrilled to invite you to join us in celebrating this monumental milestone. We want you to embrace this experience and read to students at our partner Quality Childcare Initiative centers. United Way Suncoast will promote Read Across Suncoast, a special initiative inspired by Read Across America, through March and April with the aim of reading to 100 children in our 100th year.
We’re inviting volunteers to join us at our Quality Childcare Initiative sites across the region. Volunteers will have the opportunity to read to children and engage in educational activities, fostering a love for reading and learning from an early age. Our goal is ambitious yet fitting for our centennial year – we aim to have 100 volunteers participate in this region-wide event, spanning all five counties we serve: Hillsborough, Pinellas, Manatee, Sarasota, and DeSoto.
How to Participate
Participating in Read Across Suncoast is easy and immensely rewarding. The event will take place during the morning hours, Monday through Friday. We’ll determine specific dates and locations based on the availability of volunteer groups and childcare sites.
If you’re passionate about literacy and eager to make a difference in the lives of children in our community, we invite you to join us for Read Across Suncoast. Your participation will enrich the lives of young learners. It’ll also contribute to building a stronger foundation for future generations.
