Falling Into Service

Volunteer at Royal Theater Club

Volunteers at Royal Theater Club It was a beautiful day in August as volunteers from Women United and Young Leaders’ Society gathered for a fall day of service at the Royal Theater Club of the Suncoast in St. Petersburg.

Opened in 1948, The Royal Theater (nee Theatre) served as a cultural hub for nearly two decades in the historically African American Jordan Park neighborhood of St. Petersburg. Closed in 1965, the theater found new life in the 70s with the Boys & Girls Clubs. The Royal Theater now serves students in a variety of afterschool programs through the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Suncoast, a strategic community partner of United Way Suncoast (UWS).

“Seeing the Royal Theatre still going strong and serving the children of S. St Petersburg was inspiring. I am proud that my UW donations can help to sustain this legendary place for the community” shared Women United Membership and Engagement Committee Chair, Kristin Johnson.Volunteer at Royal Theater Club

Volunteers beautified the playground, seating area, parking lot and plants in front of the building mural celebrating young people. They also sanitized equipment and weeded the perimeter of the building.

Inside, volunteers plastered walls, painted, cleaned, organized and installed art from local artists on the walls. A few of the artworks were created by individuals attending PARC, a local organization serving people with disabilities and UWS strategic community partner.
