“My son Maison did not speak prior to coming to the Reading Room [last year]. You changed his life,” said Junior Caruso, father of Kylea & Maison who attended the 2017 UWS Reading Room at La Mirada.
And the United Way Suncoast Reading Room at La Mirada Apartments is open again this summer to help more children and families like Maison, Kylea and Junior.
At the first Parent Night, we introduced the 2018 Summer Programming. The meeting was held with support from The Patterson Foundation and over 20 families spent the evening touring the Reading room and talking with staff about the importance of reading with their children and enrolling in the Summer Book Challenge.
The 8-week 180-hour Summer Book Challenge is offered to La Mirada residents from June 11 through August 2, 2018. Last year, the Reading Room helped bring library resources and educational materials to children who needed them most in an effort to encourage learning during summer, when they are most susceptible to summer learning loss. Aside from story time, children were also provided access to tablets with literacy prep games and book packs.
This is the second year of the La Mirada Summer programming with United Way Suncoast taking the lead on program design in 2018. Programming will emphasize literacy with age appropriate STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math) infusion. To date, the 2018 STEAM enrichment partners include Mote Marine Aquarium, Early Learning Center STEAM Machine, La Mirada Parent Hero’s, guest authors, Van Wezel Performing Arts Center and a STEM Robotics program on Wednesday afternoons from 1:30 pm to 3:30 pm.
