ReadingPals Orientation

1:00 pm – 3:00 pm

United Way Suncoast

5201 W. Kennedy Blvd

Suite 600

Tampa, FL

Children who are read to are more likely to become good readers. And children who read at grade level by the fourth grade are four times more likely to graduate from high school.

Become a ReadingPal.

ReadingPals is a United Way program where volunteers provide positive reinforcement and personal attention to a child (kindergarten through 3rd grade) who would benefit from a little extra reading support. We aim to not only improve children’s reading skills, but also impart a love of reading.

ReadingPals offers two opportunities to volunteer:

      • Choosing a one-hour time slot when it fits your schedule, working with different children every time as a ReadingPal Reader; or
      • Committing to regularly meet one hour a week with the same child as a ReadingPal Tutor.

Both volunteer positions require a background screening and a two-hour orientation to prepare you to work with students.

There are 6 after-school sites to choose from across Hillsborough and Pinellas counties.

Thank you for your interest in becoming a ReadingPal. If you have any further questions please contact Nicole Brown at nbrown@uwsuncoast.org or 813-274-0998.

Celebrate International Walk-To-School Day With Walking School Bus

7:00am – 8:00am

Campbell Park Elementary Address:
1051 7th Ave S, St. Petersburg, FL 33705

You’re invited to come walk with the “Walking School Bus!” International Walk-to-School Day aims to promote good health and fitness by giving children opportunities to exercise daily, in addition to helping them become more aware of directions, traffic patterns, street signs, and model pedestrian behavior. The Walking School Bus has successfully shown a decrease in tardiness and increases in school attendance and parent involvement.

The day also helps bring awareness to the need for walk-friendly communities, as Florida is the deadliest state in the country for pedestrians and cyclists, with the Tampa Bay area ranking as the state’s second-worst.

Routes:

Enoch Davis Recreation Center – will leave at 7:15 am
Metro PCS 9th Street – will leave at 7:15 am
Silver Lake Park – will leave at 7:15 am
Bethel Heights Apartments – will leave at 7:30 am
