Participants will enjoy more than a dozen challenging obstacles including a 6-foot wall climb, high wall scale, low crawl and much more. Total distance for the race is ~3 miles.

The race is not only a fun and engaging event for our community, but it’s also a metaphor for the obstacles so many people in our community face and how, with your help, United Way Suncoast is providing tools and support to help them achieve and overcome.

Proceeds will fund programs and services right here in the Sarasota/Manatee area to continue to fight for the education and financial stability of every person in our community. Programs like a new career training program at the United Way Suncoast Booker Middle School Resource Center where we have, in partnership with CareerEdge Funders Collaborative, successfully launched tuition-free Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) classes. The class and certification earned help motivate participants to increase their lifetime earning potential by building their job skills in careers desperately needed in our community.

Sound fun, but a little too challenging? Join the fun as a volunteer!

We’re looking for fun, energetic individuals to help make this race a success with a variety of opportunities available throughout the day. Email unitedway@uwsuncoast.org for more information.

ReadingPals Orientation

12 pm – 2 pm

Temple Terrace Library

202 Bullard Pkwy.
Temple Terrace, FL 33617

Children who are read to are more likely to become good readers. And children who read at grade level by the fourth grade are four times more likely to graduate from high school.

Become a ReadingPal.

ReadingPals is a United Way program where volunteers provide positive reinforcement and personal attention to a child (kindergarten through 3rd grade) who would benefit from a little extra reading support. We aim to not only improve children’s reading skills, but also impart a love of reading.

ReadingPals offers two opportunities to volunteer:

Choosing a one-hour time slot when it fits your schedule, working with different children every time as a ReadingPal Reader; or
Committing to regularly meet one hour a week with the same child as a ReadingPal Tutor.
Both volunteer positions require a background screening and a two-hour orientation to prepare you to work with students.

There are 18 after-school sites to choose from across Hillsborough, Pinellas and Sarasota counties.

Thank you for your interest in becoming a ReadingPal. If you have any further questions please contact Nicole Brown at nbrown@uwsuncoast.org or 813-274-0998.

2017 ALICE Report Update

You’re invited to a panel discussion on a study of financial hardship presented by the independent United Ways serving Manatee and Sarasota Counties.  ALICE represents those who work hard and are above the poverty line, but due to high costs and factors often beyond their control, live paycheck to paycheck.  This update to the first report, published in 2014, shows many positive and exciting examples of Florida’s continued population and economic growth.  It also highlights the fact that, even with three+ years of economic recovery under our belt, during which unemployment fell 50%, the rate of Florida’s households who struggle financially (ALICE) has barely changed.

Friday, April 14:  1 pm – 3 pm

State College of Florida, Lakewood Ranch Campus Auditorium

7131 Professional Parkway E., Sarasota, FL  34240

Tickets only $15.  Register by April 7th.
