Primary Purpose of Position:

This position provides direct leadership for internal activities and external relationships within the geographic area of Sarasota and DeSoto Counties, to carry out the mission, core values and strategic goals of the United Way Suncoast.

Key roles include:
• Ensure Sarasota Area resource development goals in workplace giving and major gifts are achieved.
• Create and sustain strong relationships with donors, partners and volunteers, resulting in strong commitments of passion, expertise and resources for the strategic work of United Way.
• Lead, convene and partner with others to implement the United Way Suncoast regional impact agenda and address the root causes of community problems.
• Provide professional guidance and management to assigned staff.
• Provide professional guidance and support to the local Area Board and Committees.
• Champion United Way Brand and effectively communicate the United Mission in the local area.
• Serve on the Executive and Senior Leadership Teams forming and aligning local and regional operations to increase community impact and resources.

Keys Areas of Responsibility:

Donor Relations:
• Cultivate and maintain relationships with corporate partners, donors, foundations and government to increase and leverage resources.
• Work collaboratively with the Board, volunteer leadership and professional resource development staff to achieve annual resource development goals.
• Execute strategies and assist in the development of community impact products to secure major and planned giving contributions.

Community Impact:
• Engage community and Board in analyzing local conditions, developing vision, selection of research-based impact strategies and determination of United Way role(s).
• Create engagement opportunities for donors/partners in local area markets.
• Communicate on development, progress and results year-round with local internal and external stakeholders.
• Partner with the regional Investment Strategies team to facilitate community investment process to direct service partners, and manage community initiative strategies ensuring maximum quality, efficiency and accountability to donors.

Organizational Leadership:
• Provide day-to-day leadership and direction to local area staff team, delegating effectively and ensuring opportunities for growth and training.
• Ensure staff engagement and performance toward organizational and personal goals.
• Develop goals, annual work plans, and budgets within the defined parameters to execute local and regional work.
• Serve on the Executive and Senior Leadership Teams forming and aligning local and regional operations to increase community impact and resources.

Local Area Board and Key Committees:
• Engage the local Board and Committees in key community issues, goals and strategies to ensure successful resource development; investment, initiative and program support; and overall relationship management.
• Develop and execute organization and community plans for Area Board and Committees.
• Identify, recruit and train volunteers in partnership with CEO, COO and the Area Board Nominating Committee for leadership positions on Suncoast and Area Boards and Committees.

Regionalization:
• Lead effort to effectively integrate and align local operations within United Way Suncoast.
• Maximize resources and relationships to achieve regional vision, goals and strategies.
• Partner with the Chief Impact Officer, Senior Team Leads and other staff for each of the United Way Suncoast programs and initiatives, to share best practices and further strengthen and expand the local impact.
• Advance United Way presence and promote regional leadership and impact.

Other Responsibilities:
• Perform additional duties or tasks to support United Way’s mission as directed by CEO of United Way Suncoast, Inc.

• Leadership: Demonstrate strong team leadership skills. Ability to motivate and guide others to perform in accordance with clear expectations and goals.
• Strategic Thinking and Visioning: Ability to think long-term and develop an image of how United Way and the community can work together, creating a vision that energizes others to commit to the vision.
• Teamwork and Partnership: Ability to work internally in support of the “team” vision and goals; and ability to create and sustain effective external partnerships that work for the long-term.
• Relationship Skills: Ability to establish and maintain good rapport and relationships with partners and staff that builds an environment of working together toward achieving common goals.
• Business Acumen: Strong strategic, budgeting, planning and execution skills. Ability to understand business-related topics and issues, and clear understanding and support of the United Way Suncoast brand.
• Communication Skills: Ability to speak with confidence and effectiveness before individuals and groups; listen and converse with community leaders at all levels (especially CEO’s); produce well written letters, reports, and other communications, and prepare and give professional presentations regarding the findings.

Education and Experience:

Bachelor’s Degree minimum. Five to seven years of experience in strategic management in the for-profit or non-profit sector, United Way experience preferred. Must have experience in marketing/communications, budget preparation and management, resource development, program planning and development, and volunteer led initiatives. Minimum three years experience with supervision of staff.
