Beall’s Inc. and Manatee County Utilities Fight For Early Literacy

Thanks to Beall’s Inc. corporate campus and the Manatee County Utilities Department, students in Manatee will be gifted with Family Literacy Year-Long (FLY) Kits to encourage early learning and better prepare them for the Florida Voluntary Prekindergarten (VPK) Assessment. Beall’s Inc. and Manatee County Utilities hosted in-house volunteer projects in April to support the Soar in 4 program run in partnership with the School District of Manatee. The Utilities Department had 10 volunteers and constructed 60 kits over 2.5 hours and Beall’s had 18 volunteers and constructed 60 kits over 3 hours.  The FLY (Family Literacy Year-Long) Kits are self-contained kits for the home that include materials and resources developed based on standards tested on the VPK assessment. Each play-based kit includes 3 books, a social/emotional learning engagement and family literacy/math activities. FLY kits will be selectively distributed weekly by the classroom teacher based upon individual student needs and will also be implemented in the Soar In 4 classrooms with volunteers provided by United Way Suncoast.

The Soar in 4 mission is to ensure children from families of all races, ethnicities, incomes, abilities, and languages have the opportunities and support they need for success in school and beyond with an emphasis on family engagement. Soar in 4 initiatives for the 2018-2019 school year will be in 6 Title I schools, 20 classrooms and 6 neighborhoods.
